Great band. Loved them from the start. Bought their first live album in 1978 and added several others over the years. Saw them play live once when Ilived in Stepney - at Queen Mary College in the Mile End Road. I was the only person in the audince wearing a duffle coat and hair down to my shoulders! Suprised I ddin't get duffed up! Wonderful gig - very ramshackle but full of inventiveness and vigour. I wrote to Mark E. Smith afterwards to say how much I enjoyed it and he kindly sent me a bootle tape of the band in concert in Texas which i still have somewhere.
Unfortunately, Mark E had a bad reputation didn't he. He could be forthright at times if not a little rude but I liked them. Wish I had seen them live.
Yes, he was a bit of a drunkard and foul mouthed oaf at times but still an amazing wordsmith and genius and taking the band through so many changes over the years and somehow retaining that special spark. Much missed!
