fear in man rises
but those who walk on two legs
cause much greater destruction

The snake pictured is a harmless grass snake. It is non-venomous. Yet many people would kill it on sight.

Bob Dylan

There was a time when the songs coming out of songs written by songwriters were compared to poetry. This started as far as I recall about the time Bob Dylan first appeared. Songs were no longer just songs but were acclaimed not just for the melody or lyrics but for there poetical content. They were favourably compared to poetry.  Many were they who rubbished this idea. Notably, my Mum who not only said it wasn't poetry at all but wasn't even a song sung by a singer but by someone who couldn't sing at all. There lies a perfect example of why we had a generation gap.

The first vocal poetry was sung by a Troubadour. Troubadour's wandered around southern France and northern Italy and Spain warbling the poetry in song. Encyclopaedia Britannica states - Troubadour poetry formed one of the most brilliant schools that ever flourished, and it was to influence all later European lyrical poetry. This gentleman, the aforementioned Bob Dylan, remains one of the greatest exponents of the troubadour revival in the sixties. He is by no means the only one. Less Spoken Word poetry with which it shares kinship but poetry with melody.

Always believing him out of her reach
There was a subtle trembling in her speech
Whenever she had something to report
As she daydreamed of being his consort

But dreams become nightmares for foolish girls
He stole a treasure more precious than pearls
Never could she believe he was that man
A cur in an alley grabs what he can

She believed him to be a righteous gent
Quickly from her heart was that belief rent
He was a doctor, she minded his kids
She is left with the guilt from what he did

Her innocence died upon that cold night
There is nothing on Earth can make it right

Notes
If all you wanna see is the poetry, this is is your stop. If you wanna take note of the notes, stick around!

I am very grateful to the folks at the Sunday Muse blog for providing this photo. It turned out to be the push I needed to get out of my stuck place with my WIP, The Ballad of Gerry Clifford.

Lotus is the older sister of the titular character. She was adopted into the large, loving Clifford family when she was six years old. She wrote this sonnet after being molested at twelve years old by the doctor whose children she babysat for.

Ghost Town Grover Sez:
"Back in my minin' days, I loved ter see a big ole golden moon in the sky whilst lazin' 'round a campfire enjoyin' a swig of whiskey or a few with the fellers. But the thing I loved to see most was a big ole golden nugget down in the mine!"

Cactus Clem Sez:
"One of my most favorite things in all the wide world is takin' a stroll on a spring night with the full moon shinin' down on the Lone Prairie. 'Specially if I got a big ole jug of White Lightnin' to swig on now and again."

Ornery Poetry + Sly Rhymes: The More Things Change (Part 2)

Image by Tibor Janosi Mozes from Pixabay

The more things change, the more they stay shitty
The words of the Orange Dolt ain't pretty
He talks like a clown
Spewing his foolishness 'round
Proving his brain is just itty bitty

NaPoWriMo: Write a review poem of something that doesn't usually get reviewed. Well, it's a review poem anyway. I give this particular subject terrible reviews all the time. Every time I fart, it's a review of what I think of his shitty performance.

April PAD Challenge: Write a change poem. Boy, do we need a change before Vice-Admiral Shitbrain sinks not only his own ship but the whole goddamn fleet with his egotistical ineptitude.

notes
I'm keeping it simple today and just having fun, letting my snarky, politically inclined alter-ego, Sly Fawkes, take the reins. This poem isn't anywhere near good enough to share on any of my subscription platforms.

I'm using this poem for my debut on Something For the Weekend, Sir, to be published on May 3, 2020. If you enjoy discussing poets and poetry, stop by. They may not want me back after this one!

If you enjoy my work, please click here to find out how you can support me. One of the easiest suggestions pays you and me both!
